- Mind the gaps. Because the perp keeps moving while the underlying stock's exchange is closed, the perp can run ahead of where the share "last printed." When the real market reopens, prices can converge sharply — especially around earnings.
- Funding never sleeps. A funding rate accrues continuously to keep the perp tethered to the underlying. Holding a position over a weekend still incurs funding.
- Liquidity varies. Volume can thin out during off-hours, which can mean wider spreads and more slippage on large orders.
A Note on Earnings and Weekends
The biggest practical implication is event risk. A stock that reports earnings after the close will see its perp react instantly, while the real share is frozen until the next session. If you're holding a leveraged position into an earnings print, a 24/7 perp can move hard while you sleep — so size accordingly and consider a stop.
